چکیده
We investigate the nonlinear evolution of pairs three-dimensional, equal-sized and opposite-signed vortices at finite Froude Rossby numbers. The two may be offset in vertical direction. initial conditions stem from relative equilibria obtained numerically quasi-geostrophic regime, for vanishing first address linear stability vortices, show that all offsets, are sensitive to an instability when close enough together. Finally, we flow remains remarkably balanced state, emitting only waves containing negligible energy, even leads

Stable counter-rotating vortex pairs in saturable media
We resolve a controversial issue of the stability of composite vortex solitons in self-focusing saturable nonlinear media. Stable vortex solitons with hidden angular momentum, i.e., composed of counter-rotating beams with topological charges +1 and −1, are found, and their linear-stability region is identified. In contrast, the solitons with explicit vorticity are always unstable against splitt...

Submitted for the MAR10 Meeting of The American Physical Society Vortex ring refraction at large Froude numbers1 KERRY KUEHN, MATTHEW MOELLER, MICHAEL SCHULZ, DANIEL SANFELIPPO, Wisconsin Lutheran College — We have experimentally studied the impact of a planar axisymmetric vortex ring, incident at an oblique angle, upon a sharp gravity-induced interface separating two fluids of differing densit...
متن کاملLow Rossby limiting dynamics for stably stratified flow with finite Froude number
In this paper, we explore the strong rotation limit of the rotating and stratified Boussinesq equations with periodic boundary conditions when the stratification is order 1 ([Rossby number] Ro = !, [Froude number] Fr= O(1), as !→ 0). Using the same framework of Embid & Majda (Geophys. Astrophys. Fluid Dyn., vol. 87, 1998, p. 1), we show that the slow dynamics decouples from the fast. Furthermor...
متن کاملNon-normal dynamics of time-evolving co-rotating vortex pairs
Transient energy growth of disturbances to co-rotating pairs of vortices with axial core flows is investigated in an analysis where vortex core expansion and vortex merging are included by adopting a time-evolving base flow. The dynamics of pairs are compared with those of individual vortices in order to highlight the effect of vortex interaction. Three typical vortex pair cases are studied, wi...
